Making Peace With Your Mortality: The Paradox That Sets You Free
I need to tell you something that might sound counterintuitive.
Something that goes against everything our culture teaches us about death.
Here it is:
The people who live MOST fully are the ones who've made peace with their mortality.
Not in a morbid way.
Not in a depressed, giving-up way.
But in a liberated, eyes-wide-open, THIS-IS-REAL way.
Let me show you what I mean.
The Woman Who Taught Me Everything
Her name was Dorothy. She was 68. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
When I met her, she had maybe 6 months left.
And she was the most ALIVE person I'd ever encountered.
Not in denial. Not fighting reality.
She had made PEACE with dying.
And that peace had set her FREE to actually LIVE.
She told me:
"For 60 years, I avoided thinking about death. Pushed it away. Pretended it wouldn't happen to me.
And you know what that cost me?
PRESENCE.
I was so busy avoiding the thought of death that I wasn't fully LIVING.
Now I KNOW I'm dying. And I've never felt more ALIVE.
Because I'm not wasting ANY of this time."
She died 4 months later.
And those 4 months? She LIVED them.
Fully. Intentionally. Without fear.
Because she'd made peace with the end.
The Paradox Nobody Talks About
Here's the paradox:
Accepting that you're going to die actually frees you to LIVE.
Not someday.
Not when you're "ready."
RIGHT NOW.
Because when you truly accept that time is finite, you stop wasting it.
When you accept that nothing lasts forever, you start savoring what IS.
When you accept that someday you'll be gone, you start showing up more fully while you're here.
This isn't depressing.
This is LIBERATING.
What "Making Peace" Actually Means
It doesn't mean:
Being obsessed with death
Living in fear
Becoming morbid or depressing
Giving up on the future
Surrendering to despair
It means:
Accepting that death is part of life (not the enemy of it)
Holding the preciousness of NOW (because it won't last forever)
Making different choices (because time is limited)
Releasing what doesn't matter (because life is too short)
Showing up fully (because you won't always be here)
The Shift That Happens
When you TRULY accept your mortality—not just intellectually, but in your BONES—everything changes.
I've watched it happen hundreds of times.
Suddenly:
YOU CARE LESS ABOUT:
What people think of you
Accomplishing "enough"
Keeping up appearances
Small conflicts that don't matter
Perfect circumstances before living
Accumulating more stuff
YOU CARE MORE ABOUT:
Time with people you love
Experiences that make you feel alive
Saying what needs to be said
Being authentically yourself
Creating memories
Living without regret
This isn't theory. This is what ACTUALLY HAPPENS.
The Research on Mortality Awareness
Studies on "mortality salience" (awareness of death) show something fascinating:
When people are reminded of their mortality:
They prioritize relationships over achievement (Journal of Personality, 2023)
They make more values-aligned decisions (Psychological Science, 2024)
They experience greater gratitude and presence (Emotion Journal, 2024)
They report higher life satisfaction (Well-Being Research, 2023)
Paradoxically, thinking about death makes people VALUE LIFE more.
Real Stories of Making Peace
James, 55:
"I had a health scare last year. Thought I was having a heart attack. Turned out to be nothing serious.
But sitting in that ER, thinking 'this might be it,' something clicked.
I realized: I've been living like I have infinite time. And I DON'T.
Since then, I:
Quit the job that was killing me
Started saying no to obligations I hate
Booked the trip I'd been putting off
Tell my wife I love her every day
Actually PLAY with my kids instead of being on my phone
I'm not dying. But I'm LIVING like my time matters.
Because it DOES."
Linda, 63:
"My sister died suddenly at 60. No warning. Just... gone.
It shook me to my core.
I thought: that could be ME. Tomorrow. Next year. I don't KNOW.
So I started asking myself: 'If I died next year, would I regret how I'm living NOW?'
And the answer was YES.
So I changed:
Reconciled with my estranged brother
Started the creative project I'd put off for 20 years
Stopped attending events out of obligation
Prioritized time with people who actually matter
I'm not morbid. I'm FREE.
Free to live the life I actually WANT.
Because I KNOW it won't last forever."
How to Actually Make Peace
This isn't something you DO once.
It's a PRACTICE.
Here's how:
PRACTICE #1: SIT WITH THE THOUGHT
Once a week, spend 5 minutes sitting with this thought:
"Someday, I will die."
Not to be morbid. To be REAL.
Then ask: "Knowing this, how do I want to live?"
PRACTICE #2: NOTICE THE PRECIOUSNESS
When you accept that nothing lasts forever, everything becomes more precious.
Your child's laugh.
Your spouse's hand in yours.
The taste of good coffee.
The warmth of sunshine.
Practice NOTICING: "This moment won't come again."
PRACTICE #3: LET IT CHANGE YOUR CHOICES
Mortality isn't just a fact to accept.
It's wisdom to APPLY.
When facing a choice, ask:
"If I had limited time, what would I choose?"
That's probably the right choice.
PRACTICE #4: TALK ABOUT IT
Death becomes less scary when we bring it into the light.
Have real conversations about mortality with people you trust.
Not just logistics. FEELINGS.
"What does death bring up for you?"
"How does it change how you want to live?"
PRACTICE #5: FIND THE GRATITUDE
Yes, you're going to die someday.
But you're ALIVE right now.
That's not guaranteed. That's PRECIOUS.
Every morning, first thought:
"I get another day. I'm alive. What will I do with it?"
What You Gain
When you make peace with your mortality, you don't become depressed.
You become FREE.
Free to:
Stop performing for others
Stop accumulating for the sake of it
Stop impressing people who don't matter
Stop waiting for "someday"
Stop wasting time on what doesn't matter
And start:
Being present with what IS
Connecting deeply with who MATTERS
Living authentically as YOURSELF
Savoring fully what you HAVE
Loving completely while you CAN
The Question That Changes Everything
If you KNEW you had exactly 5 years left, what would you do differently?
Think about it.
Really think.
Would you:
Quit your job? Stay but care less about small stuff?
Move somewhere else? Stay but appreciate where you are more?
End a relationship? Fight harder to fix it?
Reconnect with someone you've lost touch with?
Finally pursue that dream?
Spend more time with certain people? Less with others?
Say yes to things you've been saying "someday" to?
Say no to things you've been doing out of obligation?
Now here's the hard question:
If those things would matter with 5 years left, why aren't you doing them NOW?
You might have 5 years.
You might have 50.
But you don't KNOW.
So live accordingly.
The Gift of Acceptance
Making peace with mortality isn't about giving up.
It's about waking up.
Waking up to:
The preciousness of NOW
The importance of CHOICE
The value of PRESENCE
The urgency of LOVE
The freedom of AUTHENTICITY
This is the GIFT.
Not someday-when-you're-dying.
Right now.
Your Invitation
This week, I invite you to try something:
Sit with your mortality.
Not to be scared.
To be FREE.
Ask yourself:
"Knowing I will die someday, how do I want to live?"
Then LIVE that way.
Not perfectly. Not all at once.
But intentionally. One choice at a time.
Because the life you'll wish you'd lived?
It's available to you right now.
You just have to accept that it won't last forever.
And then choose to actually LIVE it.
While you still can.
PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT:
This week: Spend 5 minutes sitting with "Someday, I will die"
Then ask: "How does that change how I want to live?"
Then DO: Make ONE choice differently based on that awareness
Repeat: Weekly, make mortality awareness part of your practice
The peace is waiting.
The freedom is available.
All you have to do is stop running from the truth.
And start LIVING it.
